| Over the years, the devoted volunteers of Save-A-Landmark have helped to protect dozens of interesting landmarks. They've kept the World's Largest Rocking Chair, in Mississippi, from wearing out. They've repaired the National Civil Rights Museum, in Memphis, Tennessee. They've even helped to restore(整修) the Birthplace of the Ice Cream Sundae, in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Now, ten years later, Save-A-Landmark is celebrating its 10th anniversary(周年纪念日) by saving President Abraham Lincoln's Cottage, in Washington, D.C. President Lincoln's Cottage is the first Save-A-Landmark site to be located(位于) in the nation's capital. About 50 volunteers joined in the event, which took place on September 16. One of those volunteers was actor Sam Waterston, of NBC's Law& Order. Waterston has acted Lincoln on stage and on screen. Even though he has become an expert on the nation's 16th president, Waterston says he still couldn't believe how amazing Lincoln's Cottage was. "This home is truly one of the better kept secrets about the man," Waterston told TFK. "He spent a quarter of his presidency(1861-1865) here, and he worked on the Emancipation Proclamation here. Even though it was like a summer home, he did a lot of important work here. It's a great place for kids to learn more about Lincoln's life." Hampton Hotels created Save-A-Landmark in April 2000. Judy Christa-Cathey is a manager for the hotel chain. She was especially excited about the Lincoln's Cottage project. "I grew up in Illinois, the Land of Lincoln," she says. In ten years, Save-A-Landmark has restored 54 sites in 45 states. Now Landmark can add another Landmark to the list: the famous house of one of the country's most popular presidents. |
